Horse trekking along Lake Khovsgol + Nadaam Festival
July 1 – July 15, 2008 (15 days) 3190 US $

July 1: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar (UB), Pick up from the airport (or railway station). After lunch, sightseeing in UB: Russian Friendship monument and Sukhbaatar Square, overnight in standard hotel.

July 2: Flight to Murun, capital of Khovsgol province. From the airport we drive the 4 hours to Hatgal, the gateway to Khovsgol National Park at the southern end of the lake with the same name. There, we sleep in gers (Mongolian felt tents) in a basic but comfortable guest house.

July 3: We meet our horses and wranglers, adjust saddles and tack and embark on a short shakedown ride in the hills behind the guesthouse. After lunch we leave town, crossing the Egin Gol (river) over the old wooden bridge. Our camp will be close to the lake shore.

July 4: We ride around 40 km along the lake shore.

July 5: We leave the shore and head inland towards the old Russian Hotspring Resort at Bulnai. Expect nothing fancy but the pools will offer a welcome hot soak. We camp beside the resort.

July 6: We take it easy in the morning and relax in the hot pools. In the afternoon we continue our ride South.

July 7: We ride 30 km towards the small town of Chandman Undur.

July 8: After we pass through Chandman Undur we continue to the monument for Chingghis Khan’s mother and again camp out in the open steppes.

July 9: Our directions turns back west and we follow the broad valley of the Arigin River.

July 10: After we cross over the watershed we cross back over the Egin Gol and arrive in Hatgal on the evening of the Nadaam festival, Mongolia’s colourful national celebration. We stay again in a local hostel – HOT showers.

July 11: All day we watch and celebrate Nadaam with the local population and our wranglers and their families. Overnight in the same guest house.

July 12: Nadaam will still continue all morning and we will take another opportunity to join in. In the afternoon, we drive further up the lake to a comfortable ger camp at Jankai.

July 13: Free morning in Jankai. After lunch we drive back to Murun for our afternoon/evening flight back to UB (the schedule on this day depends on final confirmation of the flight times). Overnight in a standard hotel.

July 14: Free day for shopping and sightseeing and maybe for a visit to the black market or one of the museums. This is also a buffer day in case the domestic flight is delayed. Before our farewell dinner, we watch a performance of the Tumen Enkh cultural group.

July 15: Airport transfer to your flight home.
