Hiking nomadic migration routes of Khovsgol
+ Nadaam festival
July 5 – July 20, 2008 (16 days) 3490 US $
Our most popular hike! |
July 5: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar (UB), Pick up from the airport (or railway station). After lunch, sightseeing in UB: Russian Friendship monument and Sukhbaatar Square, overnight in standard hotel.
July 6: Flight to Murun, capital of Khovsgol province. From the airport we drive 3 hours to Hatgal, where we sleep in gers (Mongolian felt tents) in a basic but comfortable guest house.
July 7: Transfer to the start of the trail at the end of the old surveyors road at Ongolog. There we will meet our wranglers and load our luggage onto our pack horses. The trail follows the lakeshore for the rest of the day.
July 8: We pass the mineral springs of Har Us with their healing properties and but camp further along by at the lake shore.
July 9: The trail leaves the lake and climbs over Jiglig Pass into the valley of the Arsin Gol (river).
July 10: We follow the Arsin Gol for most of the day until we cross it for a last time and reach the encampment of the families of our Mongolian wranglers. We will spend the night nearby in our tents which will give us the opportunity to observe life on the countryside.
July 11: NADAAM! A short (three hour) walk brings us into Renchinlum (Lum to our wranglers) where we will be watching the colourful Nadaam festival, Mongolia’s annual celebration with horse racing, archery and wrestling. In Lum, we will stay at the basic, but comfortable Saridag Inn with the best HOT showers north of UB. Overnight in gers.
July 12: We spent all day in Lum, joining in the celebrations. Overnight again in gers at the Saridag Inn.
July 13: Back on the trail! We leave Renchinlum and follow the edge of the vast Darkhad valley. Before we make camp, we enter the steep gorges of the Hurtling Gol in the Horidol Saridag Mountains.
July 14: Our trail enters again into Khovsgol National Park. After Lunch, we need to climb steeply over Hurtling Pass, following the old track bulldozed by Russian surveyors looking for precious minerals.
July 15: The scenery changes again as we enter the broad valleys of the upper Arsin Gol.
July 16: We top the last pass to get a great view of Lake Khovsgol. We stay at the comfy ger camp in Jankai. Overnight in gers.
July 17: We take it easy in the morning, relaxing at the lake shore. In the afternoon we walk the spectacular horse trail that follows the lake shore into Hatgal, the small village at the southern end of the lake. Overnight in a local guest house.
July 18: We drive back to Murun and fly to Ulan Bator. Overnight in a standard hotel.
July 19: Free day for shopping and sightseeing and maybe for a visit to the black market or one of the museums. This is also a buffer day in case the domestic flight is delayed. Before our farewell dinner we watch a performance of the Tumen Enkh cultural group.
July 20: Airport transfer to the flight home
