July 23: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar (UB), Pick up from the airport (or railway station). After lunch, sightseeing in UB: Russian Friendship monument and Sukhbaatar Square, overnight in standard hotel.

July 24: Flight to Murun, capital of Khovsgol province. (KM 0) Our support truck and crew will meet us at the airport. We start cycling in the steppes right in front of the airport. Our first target are the ancient standing deer stones on the bank of the Delger Murun river. We camp overnight on the banks of the meandering river.

July 25 - 27: Our route will lead us though undulating steppe through the district of Bayanzurkh. Some of the route will follow the wooden poles of old overland telegraph line. The route will start to get hillier on day 5 and 6 with some longer climbs as we traverse the southern slopes of the Horidol Saridag mountain range. Overnight in tents.

July 28: We cycle high on the shoulders of Mount Zagas before we top Jankai Pass for our first glimpse of the majestic lake Khovsgol with its crystal clear waters. The Mongolians refer to it as “the Mother Ocean”. A swift downhill brings us into the ger camp at Jankai for a hot shower and a meal on the veranda overlooking the lake. Overnight in shared gers. (KM 290)

July 29: We take it easy in the morning and have time for a swim in the lake. In the afternoon we set off for a 2 hour ride on a narrow single track right along the shores of the lake. At times, the side of the horse trail we are following drops steep into the lake and the fainthearted might prefer to push the bikes. We stay the night in a guest house in Hatgal, the gateway to Khovsgol National Park on the south end of the lake. Overnight in guest house accommodation. (KM 310)

July 30: On our way out of town we check in at the National Park Visitor Centre for a chat with the park rangers and visit the small museum with its informative displays. Then it is back on the road, starting with a crossing of the old wooden bridge over the River Eg which drains lake Khovsgol into lake Baikal and on to the Arctic Ocean. We camp out on the shores of the lake, Khovsgol that is.

July 31: A morning ride through the wooded hills on the east side of the lake brings us to the old Russian Hot Spring resort of Bulnai. Expect nothing fancy but the pools will over a welcome hot soak. We camp beside the resort. (KM 390)

August 1 - 2: Our route turns south again through the valleys of the Chandman Undur district. We stop of at the grave and monument of Chingghis Khan’s mother. Some long and steep climbs over the watershed bring us back to the Eg river. Overnight in tents.

August 3: A statue of a deer, Murun’s symbol marks the rocky outcrops of the last pass before Murun. A fast downhill brings us to into Murun, the last 2 kilometres on the comfort of our first sealed road. Overnight in a basic hotel. (KM 610) (depending on flight times, this night might be spent camping in the steppes.)

August 4: Return flight back to UB (the schedule on this day depends on final confirmation of the flight times). Overnight in a standard hotel.

August 5: Free day for shopping and sightseeing and maybe for a visit to the black market or one of the museums. This is also a buffer day in case the domestic flight is delayed. Before our farewell dinner, we watch a performance of the Tumen Enkh cultural group.

August 6: Airport transfer to the flight home.
