Highlights of Mongolia’s Heartland by
Bicycle
August 9 – 23, 2008 (15 days) 3150 US $ |
Trail conditions:
This itinerary will bring us through the heartland of Mongolia. The trails we cycle on can be anything from smooth earthen road to very rough rock strewn trails and with a few choosy single tracks thrown in for fun. There will be some memorable climbs and swift, enjoyable downhills. The majority however will be trails over the endless undulating Mongolian steppe which will allow for fast riding. A bike with a good front suspension is highly recommended. Semi slick tires with a good profile on the side have been proven ideal for track conditions to be encountered. The bikes might be subjected to some tough handling when they will be loaded onto trucks and roofracks, it is a good idea to remove any loose accessories beforehand.
Distances:
While some evening stops of this itinerary are fixed (like the camp at the Tsenker Hotspirngs), the camp sites are flexible and not determined before the trip. There will be clear sunny days when we will be blazing over smooth earthen roads and everybody is feeling great and will be content to push on for a few more kilometres. On other days a thunderstorm in the afternoon or mechanical problems might slow our progress. Therefore, the exact daily distance will be determined by the ability of the group and these outside influences. On a good day, we will often reach an average of 60 kilometres a day. On a slow day in the mountains, this might only be 30
kilometres.
Trip logistics & equipment:
A support vehicle will follow us with our support crew, all our equipment, personal kit and spares. In general, we will only have access to the support vehicle in the morning, during lunch and after the days riding. Small back packs or panniers are recommended to carry some basic spares, rain gear and snacks during the ride. While all meals are included and treated water is provided during all meals, riders are supposed to bring their own favourite on-trail snack foods such as power or musli bars and gels as well as the likes of Gatorade powder.
Accommodation & weather:
Accommodation is on a twin sharing base, in high quality German double tents which all riders are expected to pitch themselves. A mess tent will be erected for communal meals on rainy days. Weather in central Monglia in summer is generally hot and dry with occasional rain. The weather can turn any time and if a front will pass through from Siberia cold days can be expected. We make the point of always having a rain jacket with us at all times.
